Metro 2039 Story

The Metro 2039 story picture already has five clear anchors: series position, post-apocalyptic setting, war-shaped tone, political DNA, and Dmitry Glukhovsky's continuing role.

Series Position

Metro 2039 Continues the Mainline Saga

Metro 2039 is framed as the next mainline entry after Metro 2033, Metro: Last Light, and Metro Exodus.

Setting

Metro 2039 Keeps the Moscow Survival Lens

The new chapter still sits inside Metro's post-apocalyptic world of survivors, tunnels, surface danger, and hard political choices.

4A Games has tied the next Metro story to the lived pressure of war, freedom, repression, and human cost.

Metro 2039 Combat and Stealth

Combat Loop

Combat and stealth remain the clearest gameplay pillar for Metro 2039 because they define the official Metro formula.

Metro 2039 Exploration and Survival

Exploration

Resource pressure, hostile terrain, and careful scavenging continue to shape how Metro 2039 is expected to play.

Metro 2039 Story-Driven Single Player

Metro 2039 Gen 9 and PC Tech Baseline

Tech Target

  • Use Metro Exodus as the best public reference point for Metro 2039 gameplay DNA.
  • Treat resource management and environmental hazards as part of the core loop.
  • Watch the first full reveal for the first real Metro 2039 combat and traversal read.

Order commander

Miller

Core legacy lead

Colonel Miller is the commanding figure behind the Spartan Rangers' chain of command and the Aurora expedition, shaping the military tone of the series.

Series Catch-Up

Metro 2039 Story Recap

Metro 2039 story recap should be the fastest way to understand the three core Artyom games before the next chapter.

For most visitors, the clean Metro 2039 catch-up path is the core Artyom trilogy. Metro 2033 establishes underground survival, Metro: Last Light turns that world into a political crisis, and Metro Exodus pushes the saga beyond Moscow.

Game 1 · Story Year 2033

Metro 2033

After the 2013 nuclear war, Artyom grows up inside the Moscow Metro, humanity's largest refuge underground. When a new threat puts the network at risk, he leaves home and crosses stations, tunnels, and the poisoned surface to warn the rest of mankind.

Metro 2039 Key Points

  • Establishes the Moscow Metro as the center of the Metro 2039 backstory
  • Introduces Artyom as the main hero of the core game line
  • Sets the survival-horror tone of scarce resources, dark tunnels, and surface danger

Metro 2033 is the foundation chapter for Metro 2039 readers. It explains who Artyom is, how the Metro world works, and why later chapters keep revisiting the limits of underground survival.

Chronology

Metro 2039 Series Timeline

Use the Metro 2039 timeline to scan the story-world order from the Last War to Metro Exodus in one pass.

This Metro 2039 timeline follows story year instead of release year. It helps readers place the nuclear war, prequel-era material, Artyom's three major game eras, and the strongest bridge period before the next mainline chapter.

2013World Reset

The Last War devastates the surface

Nuclear war destroys normal life, poisons the surface, and pushes Moscow survivors underground into the Metro. Every later Metro book and game grows out of this break with the old world.

2028Prequel Era

Metro Awakening becomes the earliest playable chapter

Set 15 years after nuclear fire, Metro Awakening follows Serdar through the tunnels in a VR-only story. It expands the franchise backward in time before Artyom's core arc.

2033Metro 2033

Artyom's first journey defines the game saga

By 2033, an entire generation has been born underground. Artyom leaves the station-cities to warn humanity about a growing threat and becomes the central figure of the Metro game line.

2034Metro 2034 / Last Light

The saga splits into major book and game threads

The books widen through Homer, Sasha, and Hunter during a deadly outbreak, while the games keep Artyom central as Metro politics escalate toward conflict over D6.

2035Metro 2035

Artyom searches for life beyond the tunnels

Artyom keeps risking radiation to scan for other survivors and uncovers truths that reshape his understanding of Metro life. This is the strongest book bridge into the wider future.

2036Metro Exodus

The series leaves Moscow behind

Metro Exodus sends Artyom and the Spartan Rangers across Russia aboard the Aurora through a story that spans the seasons. The franchise expands from tunnel survival into a broader wasteland journey.

Play Order

Metro 2039 Game Order

The clean Metro 2039 prep route is the main trilogy first, with Metro Awakening as optional VR context.

If your goal is Metro 2039 readiness without confusion, follow the Artyom mainline path first. Metro 2033 Redux, Metro: Last Light Redux, and Metro Exodus are the core run; Metro Awakening adds bonus context if you also want the earlier VR prequel.

1

Start with Metro 2033 Redux

Core Start

This is the definitive modern version of the first Metro game and the best entry point for new players. It introduces Artyom, station-cities, surface danger, and the survival rules of the universe.

  • Steam release date: August 25, 2014
  • Definitive modern version of the first mainline story
  • Best first stop before any other Metro game
2

Continue with Metro: Last Light Redux

Direct Sequel

Last Light follows Artyom in 2034 and carries the political and character setup forward from Metro 2033. It is the chapter that turns Metro into a conflict over factions, power, and the future of the underground world.

  • Steam release date: August 25, 2014
  • Direct narrative follow-up to Metro 2033
  • Redux package includes all previously released DLC
3

Then play Metro Exodus

Mainline Payoff

Exodus is the third mainline game and the moment the series leaves Moscow behind. It pays off Artyom's earlier arc and remains the clearest setup currently available before Metro 2039.

  • Steam release date: February 14, 2019
  • Story year: 2036
  • Follows a continent-spanning journey aboard the Aurora
4

Treat Metro Awakening as an optional VR prequel

Optional VR Route

Metro Awakening is a VR-only story set in 2028, earlier than the Artyom trilogy. It adds useful prequel context, but the core non-VR catch-up route still runs through 2033 Redux, Last Light Redux, and Exodus.

  • Steam release date: November 7, 2024
  • VR-only Metro entry
  • Best used as bonus context if you own VR hardware or want deeper prequel lore
Reading Order

Metro 2039 Books Order

The clean Metro 2039 reading route is Metro 2033, then Metro 2034, then Metro 2035.

For most readers preparing for Metro 2039, the key question is both order and relevance to the games. The core trilogy reads best in numbered sequence: Metro 2033 builds the foundation, Metro 2034 widens the cast, and Metro 2035 brings Artyom back while pulling major threads together.

1

Read Metro 2033 first

Foundation

Metro 2033 is the opening chapter of the core Metro novels and the clearest way to learn the rules, politics, and mood of the Moscow Metro. It is also the novel with the strongest overlap to the first game.

  • Core Metro novel centered on Artyom
  • Establishes the underground world that later books and games build on
  • Best single starting point for both readers and players
2

Read Metro 2034 second

Perspective Shift

Metro 2034 moves one year forward but shifts away from Artyom. It expands the saga through Sasha, Homer, and Hunter and acts as the bridge from a single-hero story to a wider Metro world.

  • Story year: 2034
  • Expands Metro beyond Artyom's viewpoint
  • Best read before Metro 2035 because its characters carry forward
3

Finish with Metro 2035

Convergence

Metro 2035 returns Artyom to center stage and pushes him toward the question of life beyond Moscow. It works as the main convergence point between long-form novel themes and game-era discussion before Metro 2039.

  • Story year: 2035
  • Returns focus to Artyom
  • Strongest final core read for users moving between books and games
World Politics

Metro 2039 Factions

Metro politics is built around stations, supply lines, and armed blocs. These are the factions that give the series its long-running political identity.

For Metro 2039, factions are not background lore. They explain who controls trade, who controls violence, who protects knowledge, and why any return to Moscow politics immediately becomes a fight over lines, stations, and survival.

Trade Power

Hanza

The Hanseatic League is the Metro's commercial superpower and the closest thing the tunnels have to an economic center.

  • Controls the Koltsevaya Ring Line, the key trade route of the Metro.
  • Trade from every station and faction passes through Hanza checkpoints.
  • Maintains roughly 4,000 to 5,000 soldiers and protects commerce more than ideology.
Knowledge Hub

Polis

Polis is the intellectual heart of the Metro and one of the few places where pre-war culture and learning still feel alive.

  • Centered on the Arbatskaya, Alexandrovsky Sad, Biblioteka Imeni Lenina, and Borovitskaya transfer point.
  • Ruled by a council rather than a single head of state.
  • Protected both by its small military force and by its status as the Metro's repository of knowledge.
Elite Protectors

Spartan Order

The Spartans are the Metro's most respected military order and Artyom's core faction.

  • An elite paramilitary force closely tied to Polis.
  • Occupies the Sparta surface base and D6 after the events of Metro 2033.
  • Has about 250 members, with roughly 100 in the field at any given time.
Mass Army

Red Line

The Red Line is a Marxist-Leninist, neo-Stalinist state built on territory, manpower, and control.

  • Led by General Secretary Maxim Moskvin.
  • Controls most of the Sokolnicheskaya Line.
  • Has around 15,000 citizens, with about 6,000 to 7,000 serving in its armed forces.
Ideological State

Fourth Reich

The Reich is Metro's fascist bloc, defined by xenophobia, militarization, and constant conflict with the Red Line.

  • Built around neo-Nazi and pre-war xenophobic ideology.
  • Centered on the Tverskaya-Chekhovskaya-Pushkinskaya station complex.
  • Fields an army of roughly 2,000 to 3,000 and stays in near-permanent struggle with the Red Line.
Shadow Rule

Invisible Watchers

Metro 2035 reveals a hidden layer of power above the visible factions: the remnants of the old Russian state.

  • Presented as hidden survivors of the Russian government.
  • Keep major faction leaders in line through threats, blackmail, and bribes.
  • Use controlled conflict and managed instability as tools of population control.
World Primer

Metro 2039 Setting Explained

New players do not need every lore detail first. They need the rules of the world: why people live underground, why masks matter, and why every journey feels like survival horror.

Metro is not just a post-apocalyptic backdrop. It is a system with clear survival rules: underground shelter, poisoned surface air, station politics, dangerous travel, and one central question that keeps pushing the series forward - whether humanity is meant to stay in the tunnels at all.

The tunnels are humanity's last functioning refuge.

Why people live in the Metro

After the Last War devastated the world, only forty thousand people made it and took refuge in the Moscow Metro. Two decades later, the surface is still poisoned by nuclear fallout and mutant life, so the tunnels have become a full underground civilization.

Metro 2039 World Rules

  • The Metro was designed to function as a giant air-raid shelter.
  • Stations evolved into homes, markets, and political communities.
  • The entire series starts from the idea that survival moved underground.
Canon Guide

Metro 2039 Endings Explained

Metro endings are not bonus trivia. They shape how players understand Artyom, the Dark Ones, D6, Miller, and the future beyond Moscow.

Putting Metro 2033, Metro Last Light, and Metro Exodus side by side gives users a clean canon map before they dive into Metro 2039. This is the fastest way to understand which outcomes define the series and which legacy questions still matter most.

The first major branch decides the fate of the Dark Ones.

Metro 2033: Ranger vs Enlightened

Metro 2033 has two endings. The canonical Ranger ending lets the missile strike destroy the Dark Ones. The alternate Enlightened ending appears if Artyom earns enough moral points and destroys the guidance system instead, realizing the Dark Ones wanted peace.

Metro 2039 Canon Notes

  • Canonical path: Ranger
  • Alternate path: Enlightened
  • Core consequence: the Dark Ones are destroyed or spared
Studio & Creators

Metro 2039 Developer Explained

Search interest around Metro 2039 is already spilling into questions about 4A Games, Deep Silver, Dmitry Glukhovsky, and the studio's structure. This module gives users a clean answer to who is making the game and how that team is organized.

A lot of Metro search traffic now includes developer-side questions: Is 4A still the real Metro team, what is Deep Silver's role, where does Dmitry fit in, and how does Reburn connect to the old 4A setup. This module answers those directly from the current official pages and 4A's 2025 updates.

Reveal Window

Current Official Status

Metro 2039 already has a live official page and a scheduled showcase.

  • Deep Silver's official Metro 2039 page is online now.
  • The page lists the reveal for April 16, 2026 at 10AM PDT / 7PM CEST / 8PM EET.
  • It also points users to the official Xbox YouTube channel for event notifications.
Official Credits

Publisher, Developer, Creator

The official credits answer the simplest question first: who publishes it, who develops it, and what it is based on.

  • Published by Deep Silver, a division of PLAION.
  • Developed by 4A Games.
  • Based on Dmitry Glukhovsky's Metro book trilogy.
Studio Identity

Same Metro Team, Not a Rebrand

4A's February 2025 update was written to clear up confusion around the Metro team.

  • 4A says it is the team that created and built the Metro games.
  • The studio says it is still making the next Metro with Dmitry Glukhovsky.
  • 4A explicitly describes itself as the same core founders, leadership, and developers rather than a renamed replacement.
Studio Footprint

Where 4A Works Today

Metro 2039 is being built by a two-country studio with Ukraine still at its center.

  • 4A says it now has 200+ staff across two countries.
  • Roughly 150 of those developers remain in Ukraine.
  • The team works from Kyiv, Sliema in Malta, and remote locations.
Team History

How 4A and Reburn Connect

The old 4A naming split is one of the biggest sources of online confusion, and 4A addressed it directly.

  • In 2014, the original founders formed 4A Games Limited and created a Malta headquarters.
  • That Malta-led team continued working closely with 4A Games Ukraine on Metro Exodus.
  • After Exodus, 4A Games Ukraine pursued its own project and later renamed itself Reburn, while 4A Games Limited continued Metro.

What Shapes the Next Metro

4A's March 2025 anniversary update explains why the next Metro sounds darker and more politically charged.

  • 4A says the full-scale invasion in 2022 changed how it wanted to tell the next Metro story.
  • The studio says the next game is being shaped by lived wartime experience.
  • 4A also says Metro's anti-war, political, and emotional themes continue through its collaboration with Dmitry Glukhovsky.
